Dubai has unveiled another major tourism and sustainability project: Al Layan Oasis, a vast new desert destination designed to combine nature, leisure, and eco-conscious development in one of the emirate’s most striking landscapes.
Located in Al Marmoom, around 50 minutes from Downtown Dubai, the project aims to bring a new kind of outdoor experience to both residents and visitors. Built around a massive man-made lake and surrounded by recreational, family, and camping facilities, Al Layan Oasis is set to become one of Dubai’s most distinctive desert attractions.
What is Al Layan Oasis?
Al Layan Oasis is a large-scale eco-tourism project covering 10 million square feet (around 1 million square meters). At the heart of the development will be a 2.5 million square foot man-made lake, creating a dramatic centerpiece in the middle of the desert.
The oasis is expected to welcome around 330,000 visitors annually, offering a carefully balanced mix of tourism, environmental preservation, and outdoor recreation. Its location in Al Marmoom makes it close enough for an easy day trip from the city, while still delivering the calm and beauty of a genuine desert escape.
A project tied to Dubai’s long-term vision
Al Layan Oasis is not just another tourism development. It forms part of Dubai’s wider environmental and urban planning strategy, aligning with initiatives such as the Blue and Green Roadmap 2030, the Dubai Countryside and Rural Areas Development Plan, the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
These initiatives focus on expanding green spaces, improving quality of life, preserving natural landscapes, and creating more sustainable destinations across the emirate. In that context, Al Layan Oasis represents a new model for desert tourism: one that blends modern comfort with environmental responsibility.
Key features and infrastructure
The project has been designed to offer both accessibility and a high-quality visitor experience. Among its main features are:
- 1,000 parking spaces
- 14 kilometers of walking and cycling tracks
- 4 kilometers of elevated pathways, rising 5 meters above ground, with panoramic views over the lake and surrounding desert
- A visitor center focused on environmental awareness and education
- Expanded native planting and shaded areas to improve comfort while supporting biodiversity
The elevated pathways are especially notable, as they will offer visitors a unique way to experience the oasis from above while connecting with existing outdoor routes in the Al Marmoom area.
The four zones of Al Layan Oasis
To accommodate a wide range of visitors, the development will be divided into four distinct zones, each with its own atmosphere and purpose.
1. The Gathering Oasis
This will serve as the social and cultural heart of the destination. Planned features include an open-air cinema, an amphitheatre, a food truck plaza, and flexible event spaces for community activities, performances, and gatherings.
2. The Family Oasis
Designed with families in mind, this zone will include 28 rest areas with integrated amenities as well as dedicated children’s play areas, creating a comfortable environment for longer visits.
3. The Camping Oasis
One of the project’s most distinctive sections, the Camping Oasis will include space for 100 caravans. It is intended for visitors who want a more immersive outdoor experience and a closer connection to the desert environment.
4. The Recreation Oasis
This zone will focus on leisure and visitor services, offering recreational activities along with retail and support facilities, all integrated into a sustainable natural setting.
Sustainability at the core
Environmental sustainability is central to the concept of Al Layan Oasis. The project places strong emphasis on preserving natural systems while introducing infrastructure that allows people to enjoy the desert responsibly.
The use of native plants is an important part of that strategy. These species are naturally suited to the desert climate, require less water, and help support local biodiversity. Shaded areas created through native landscaping will also improve the visitor experience without undermining the authenticity of the landscape.
Even the lake has been conceived as more than just a visual attraction. In addition to shaping the identity of the oasis, it may help create a localized microclimate and attract birdlife, further enhancing the ecological and recreational value of the site.
Economic and tourism impact
Beyond its environmental value, Al Layan Oasis is expected to make a strong contribution to Dubai’s tourism economy. With an estimated 330,000 visitors per year, the destination is likely to appeal to both international travelers and residents looking for a weekend retreat outside the city.
The project is also expected to support wellness and social cohesion by encouraging walking, cycling, camping, outdoor family activities, and community events in a peaceful natural setting.
In addition, 365,000 square meters of the development will be open to private sector investment, creating opportunities for businesses to become part of the destination while supporting its broader vision.
Part of Dubai’s growing desert tourism network
Al Layan Oasis will join Dubai’s broader network of desert attractions, including the well-known Al Qudra Lakes and the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. Together, these destinations reflect Dubai’s ongoing effort to make its desert landscapes more accessible while preserving their ecological and cultural value.
With Al Layan Oasis, Dubai appears to be taking that strategy a step further — creating a destination where sustainability, tourism, and outdoor living come together in a single, carefully designed environment.
Final thoughts
Al Layan Oasis is shaping up to be much more than a scenic getaway. It represents Dubai’s evolving approach to development: ambitious in scale, experience-driven in design, and increasingly focused on sustainability.
If completed as planned, it could become one of the emirate’s most impressive examples of how desert landscapes can be transformed into destinations that are both environmentally conscious and highly attractive to visitors.
